Dear Client:

Happy New Year! Proud to announce new branding, new website and communication channels for 2024 and other important information in our annual newsletter.

Branding: our new logo signifies our commitment to you that you can truly trust us to complete your important tax filing. Trust us to complete it accurately, timely and with knowledge of current tax law and trends. You will see signage at our office in Shiremanstown.

Website: our new website www.millstaxcpa.com has everything you need to interact with us. You can schedule an appointment, get to our Portal to share documents and complete our annual tax preparation questionnaire. I will be writing occasional blogs on important tax updates. Visit the website and look around! You have been subscribed to the blog.

Communication:   We have new office phone number and email. This will be last time we ever change the email! Appreciate your patience on these changes.

The tax filing deadline for personal returns (form 1040), without extension, is April 15, 2024. We recommend that you compile your information and once all documents have been received, submit it to us as soon as possible.  We process returns on a first come, first served basis.  If you would like your return completed by the tax filing deadline, we must have your information no later than Monday, April 8th.  If your information is received after April 8th, your return may be extended.

Appointments. You do not need to set appointment with us in order to drop off your documents unless you have new or complicated matter you would like to discuss. Scheduling appointment is very simple. Visit website at www.millstaxcpa.com/services. Click or tap on the Schedule link under Services.

Drop Off Procedures – 

Secure drop boxes – one is located on the right side (from the front) of Shiremanstown building located at 16 W Main St or the drop box at Dave’s house at 2197 Canterbury Dr. Both will be checked multiple times daily.

Online Portal where you can safely and securely upload your tax documents. Works best for the office when you notify us once you have completely loaded everything. Please review the helpful hints we have posted on the website about ways to use the Portal. Link to the Portal is at our website –https://www.millstaxcpa.com/portal/.

Tax Organizer

In January, you will receive a tax organizer via the Portal. You will receive email notifying you its available. The organizer helps you prepare for the tax filing season. Contact the office if you want an organizer mailed to you.

Pick up procedures

The office will contact you when your return is completed.

If you are using the Secure Portal, you can safely download your tax documents to your PC. We will obtain signatures remotely. You do have option to come to the office to review the results of your return.

If not using Portal, we will notify you via a call or email that your return is ready. Use our online Appointment setter to schedule appointment to pick up or we can schedule appointment for you.. We prefer check for payment but we do accept Debit/Credit for a small additional fee.

Questionnaire

When providing your documents please fill out questionnaire. You can do that easily by visiting website and filling out the form provided. Or you can print the questionnaire below and write in your responses.

Helpful Hints

1.  Summaries vs. receipts. Provide summaries of your business expenses or your charitable deductions. I don’t need to see the receipts except for...

a.   Please note if you are claiming a charitable donation that exceeds $250 (cash or tangible items), you must have a notice from the organization acknowledging receipt. Please provide these notices to us.

b.  If you are claiming an energy credit associated with home improvement or Electric Vehicle (EV) I need all the documentation associated with that transaction. If you purchased an EV we will have to go carefully go over all the requirements for that credit.

2.  If you have a Health Savings Account, I need the form 1099-SA from your HSA provider. Sometimes they do not mail them but put the form on your HSA Portal.

3.  Review the Tax Organizer that we put on your Portal. It will help you remember all the documents you have provided in the past

When providing your documents, please include answers to our standard questions:

1.      At any time during 2023, did you receive, sell, send, exchange or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency.  If so we will need Summary of Capital Gains/Losses for the transactions –

2.      Have or will you be contributing to an IRA for 2023 if so, what type (Traditional or Roth) and by what amount -

3.      Any charity by way of cash or check?

4.      Any noncash contributions (Salvation Army / Goodwill, etc) –

5.      Any unreimbursed business expenses – anything you paid out of pocket relating to your job – union dues, trade tools, uniforms, etc –

6.      Any residential energy improvements made to your primary home during the tax year (insulation, doors, windows, geothermal, solar, etc) – if so, please provide a description of the improvement made and amount –

7.      Did you purchase health insurance through the marketplace?  If you purchased through the marketplace, please make sure to include form 1095A in your tax documents –

8.      Any TAP 529 college savings plan contributions made for anyone in 2023?  If so, please provide the amount contributed by individual –

9.      Was there any change to your account for direct deposit purposes?  Please provide us a canx check.

10.   Did you move? Important you give me the dates you moved and dates of your employment if you changed jobs in 2023 –

11.   Do you and/or your spouse have health savings accounts? If so, please provide the 1099-SA for each account.

12.   Did you purchase an Electric Vehicle? We will review all the details to determine your eligibility for the EV credit.
